Funding Success for Johan Adriaensen, Thomas Christiansen and CERiM

CERiM (the Centre for European Research in Maastricht) has been successful in its application for a new Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (2018-2021). The joint initiative of the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will further enhance cooperation between both faculties in terms of education, research and (public) outreach.

The grant marks Maastricht’s third successful Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence application since 2010 and further solidifies CERiM’s position as a hub for interdisciplinary research on the European Union within Maastricht University.

Through the funding of the European Commission’s Erasmus+ programme, CERiM will continue its long-standing Maastricht Monnet lecture series, host events for early career researchers, and support the organisation of public debates leading up to the elections for the European Parliament in 2019. It also enables the continuation of the various dissemination activities of the Centre such as the CERiM Blog, the newsletter and the working paper series.

The application was prepared by Thomas Christiansen and Johan Adriaensen and involves multiple colleagues from across the different faculties involved in CERiM.

Within the same call, Thomas and Johan were also successful in securing €300.000 of EU funding to establish a new Jean Monnet Research Network (2018-2021). The Network on East-Asia Security and Trade (EAST) brings together partners from Europe (University of Essex, IAI- Rome, SWP -Berlin) and the Asia-Pacific (University of Melbourne, Korea University, National University Singapore).

The network, coordinated by Maastricht, seeks to promote teaching excellence, stimulate cross-cultural dialogue and provide early career training. Central to this objective is an ambitious research programme that is implemented through several conferences and workshops. A dual track -one focusing on security, another on trade- will result in two edited volumes.
