The commentary is based on recently published research looking at new geopolitical narratives of resurgent ‘state capitalism’, primarily outside the West, that act as a powerful tool in ordering the spaces of world politics.
These narratives are saturated with notions of hostility, deviance, and abnormality, allowing for policy adjustments in foreign policy, trade, and development. The current exacerbation of US-China relations, particularly around TikTok, is one of many manifestations of this trend.
