Important information for graduating students about starting MA programmes at UM

ONLY RELEVANT FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS

When the pandemic started in March 2020, we all hoped everything would return to normal soon. Unfortunately, the coronavirus has been haunting our societies to this day and we have all been finding ways to cope with the limitations needed to protect our societies. Many of our students have been following online education at FASoS for over a year now. We understand that this has been challenging and we applaud the way in which you have all adapted to the changing circumstances so well.

We know that many of you would like to continue studying after your bachelor’s and have applied for master’s programmes at UM. At the same time, we know that some of you are struggling to pass all your bachelor’s courses in this online teaching environment. For this reason, UM has decided to allow graduating students to make use of the ‘zachte knip’ policy, i.e. more lenient diploma requirements for starting a master’s programme at UM.

Please read below what this means for you.

More lenient diploma requirements for master’s programmes

Usually, you can only start a master’s programme after you have completed a prerequisite bachelor’s programme and, if applicable, a pre-master’s programme (and have met a number of other admission requirements).

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, it may be more difficult to finish your bachelor’s programme (or if applicable, your pre-master’s programme) without study delay. Therefore, UM has established a policy regarding the requirements for starting a master’s programme in September 2021. These rules apply to all prospective FASoS MA students, whether they are following a bachelor’s programme at UM or at another university (in the Netherlands or abroad).

In short: students can start a FASoS master’s programme in September 2021 if they have obtained at least 80% of the ECTS from the final year of their bachelor’s programme (all ECTS from years 1 and 2 must have already been obtained). In practice, this means that third-year BA ES students need to have obtained at least 168 ECTS to be able to start a master’s programme at UM. BA AC students need to have obtained at least 164 ECTS to be able to start a master’s programme at UM (because the thesis of BA AC students is worth 16 ECTS). Pre-master’s students need to have obtained at least 48 ECTS to start a master’s programme at UM.

Do keep in mind that you need to have obtained all required ECTS to be able to receive your BA diploma. You may need to finish some courses or your thesis during your master’s degree in case you apply for the more lenient diploma requirements.

At the end of June the latest, we will let you know how you can make use of the lenient diploma requirements. You can make a request to make use of this policy from mid-July until 15 August 2021.

AGAIN, THIS INFORMATION IS FOR GRADUATING STUDENTS ONLY
