Centre Céramique, the University Library and the Maastricht Antiquarian Book & Print Fair are offering an internship for FASoS BA and MA students. The internship focuses on collections of beautiful old atlases. Students will research these objects, help prepare an exhibition at the Maastricht Antiquarian Book & Print Fair, and present their work to a larger audience.

Centre Céramique and the University Library hold unique collections of magnificent and valuable old atlases. These contain publications from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, luxurious editions as well as portable books, and all kinds of maps and city plans. They include atlases by Gerardus Mercator, the inventor of the Mercator projection that is still used, e.g. in Google Earth.

The internship consists of historical research of the atlas collections and the preparation of an exhibit to be held at the Maastricht Antiquarian Book & Print Fair, 2018. Research can focus on the atlases’ uses, readership, artwork as well as their provenance and scientific significance. Comparisons are especially suitable since the collections contain a few ‘sister editions’.

Students will be involved in the creation of an atlas exhibition. They can prepare accompanying texts and may write for the Maastricht Antiquarian Book & Print Fair’s Magazine. They can also present their work at the exhibition’s grand opening. The internship thus offers the opportunity to build up experience in historical research, exhibiting, and writing and speaking for a broader audience.

The internship should take place for a period between 1 September 2017 and January 2018. Start and end date are flexible. Bachelor’s students earn 18ECTS, master’s students 12ECTS.
