Introducing: Joey Tang

My name is Joey Tang and I started this week as a PhD student at FASoS. My research will explore gender inequality in Dutch organisations by using ‘big data’. I attained my BSc in sociology at the University of Rotterdam and my MSc in cultural sociology at the University of Amsterdam, where I also worked as a research-assistant. For the last two years, I have worked as a data scientist/analyst for various large companies in the Benelux.

During my academic career I have mostly focused on inequality, be it based on education, class or sexual identity. The largest project I have ever worked on was a research on collaborations between organisations who focus on key populations with a high rate of HIV/AIDS (LGBTs, Sex Workers and People Who Use Drugs) using network analysis. I am excited to explore inequality in society even further by examining gender inequality.

I have additionally worked as a data scientist/analyst for large companies. Based on large data sets, using machine learning and various statistical techniques, I advised organisations how to improve their websites or their internal processes. I will therefore combine my two career paths in one with this PhD.

I was born in Rotterdam and currently live in Brussels. I play music in my spare time and like to convince myself and others that I have some knowledge of film and literature.
