Introducing: John Parkinson

John Parkinson has joined FASoS as Professor of Social & Political Philosophy. A democracy theorist, he is partly responsible for the deliberative systems approach in deliberative theory. He has also written on referendums and democracy’s need for physical public space. John’s current project uses electronic tools to map topics and arguments in two debates: Scottish independence and Australian constitutional recognition of First Nations.

John was trained in Social & Political Theory at the Australian National University under critical theorist John Dryzek and utilitarian Bob Goodin, but these days is surprised to discover he has become something of a pragmatist. His latest book is Mapping and Measuring Deliberation with André Bächtiger of Stuttgart University, published by Oxford University Press; his next will be Deliberative Systems in Action, also with Oxford. He is presently in disguise, wearing a beard for winter.
