Introducing: Patricia de Vries

Hi Everyone! My name is Patricia de Vries, and I am a newbie at FASoS. Last month, I joined the Department of Philosophy as an Assistant Professor. You can contact me via email: p.devries@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

I will be tutoring & mentoring mainly in the BA Digital Society. Next to that, I’ll continue to explore artistic and social imaginaries of emerging technologies, and the anxieties that underpin our relation to them.

For example, during my PhD I worked on algorithmic anxiety in contemporary art and analysed different social anxieties braided around algorithmic culture. Currently, I am working on a research proposal on feminist blockchain imaginaries and techno-moral change. Over the past year, I developed an interest in the history and present of speculative design of the artificial womb.

Prior to my position at FASoS, I worked as a researcher, teacher and project coordinator at the Institute of Network Cultures in Amsterdam. My work there focused on the politics and (counter)cultures around digital technology, digital economy, and online identity.

Over the years I have exchanged my home town Amsterdam for Berlin, New York, Istanbul and Hong Kong, and the next stop is Maastricht. Further, I can be described as 12.2% cat lady, 10.54% amateur fighter, 9.33% terrible cook, 6% collector of loose ends, and 5% ginger chew aficionado.

I look forward to meeting you (and getting into the groove of how things work around here).

All the best,
Patricia
