Introducing: Thomas Frissen

Hi all, nice to e-meet you! My name is Thomas Frissen—feel free to call me Thom—and I am a new co-worker here at FASoS.

On 1 August, I joined the Department of Technology and Society Studies as an Assistant Professor in Digital Technology and Society.

My main tasks will be teaching, tutoring, and mentoring in the Bachelor Digital Society. Additionally, I will continue to develop my research programme. Over the past few years, I have developed a specific interest in ‘dark’ (or extreme) digital cultures and practices. For example, during my PhD and postdoc at the KU Leuven (Belgium), I studied how digital media and communication technologies affect Salafi-jihadism, right-wing extremism, and non-suicidal self-injurious behaviours. Currently, I am working on a project about ‘fake news’, conspiracy theories, and memes and how they spread in the online information ecosystem in times of crisis.

Originally, I am from Rotterdam, but I spent some of my youth years in Maastricht. It is a pleasure to be back again. In my free time, I love hanging out with friends and family, running, skiing, and sailing.

If you would like to connect, feel free to drop me an email on t.frissen@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

Looking forward to meeting you all in person soon.

See you around!
Thom
