Introducing: Tullio Viola

Hello! My name is Tullio Viola, and I just joined the Department of Philosophy as an assistant professor in the philosophy of art and culture.

I live in Berlin with my family, and we are hoping to relocate to the Maastricht area as soon as circumstances allow that. I look forward to meeting you all then! In the meantime, you can reach me at t.viola@maastrichtuniversity.nl.

Before coming to Maastricht, I held postdoc positions in Berlin and Erfurt. I have a BA and MA in philosophy from the University of Pisa and the Scuola Normale Superiore (Italy) and a PhD from Humboldt University in Berlin.

My main areas of competence are in the fields of aesthetics, social philosophy, and the theory of culture. I have been studying in particular the intellectual exchanges between Germany, France, and North-America from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, with a focus on the philosophy of history and the interplay between science, art, and society. My book on pragmatist philosopher Charles S. Peirce, “Peirce on the Uses of History,” was published by De Gruyter last year.

I will be teaching mostly in the Arts & Culture BA, and I look forward to being involved in the research activities of both the Arts, Media & Culture and the STS research groups.
