Introducing: Vanessa Bateman

Hello! My name is Vanessa Bateman and I just moved to Maastricht from Toronto, Canada.

I will be working as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Raf de Bont’s “Moving Animals” project.

Earlier this year, I completed my PhD in Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California San Diego.

The Moving Animals project is an exciting opportunity, as it will allow for me to continue my research on the cultural history of animals and the movement of both their bodies (animal migration) and visual images and objects (such as photography, film, or taxidermy).

Although I primarily work on 19th and 20th century visual culture, my research interests span from deep time to the contemporary: at UC San Diego, I completed an interdisciplinary degree in Anthropogeny (the study of human origins), while my MA was in Contemporary Art History.
