Lecture: Data protection in Europe: two dimensions, on Monday 10 May

On Monday 10 May at 18.00, ECA Maastricht and the Council of Europe will have the pleasure to welcome you to the event “Data protection in Europe: two dimensions“.

The event will introduce the topic of data protection across the European continent, as well as current challenges and career opportunities in the field.

The event is open to everyone, but you need to register here.

In the first dimension, the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation will be discussed, and compared with the CoE Convention 108, that was the original basis used for the first EU directive on data protection, adopted in 1995. The convention was modernised in 2018, leading to the “108+”. Take this opportunity to discover these legal instruments and their interrelation! As past of the second dimension, current challenges to data protection in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as the proposed EU Digital Green Certificate, will be analysed. Furthermore, career opportunities and paths related to data protection at the Council of Europe and the European Union institutions will be presented.

Our guests speakers will be:

  • Ms Sophie Kwasny, Head of the Data Protection Unit of the Council of Europe. Ms Kwasny has been working for the Council of Europe for 20 years, dealing with a variety of topics, ranging from prisons’ reforms to medical insurance, or from the independence of the judiciary to nationality law.
  • Mr Olivier Matter, Team Leader for International Cooperation at the European Data Protection Supervisor. Mr Matter has previous experience working for the Council of Europe, as well as for the European Union.
