Lecture: ‘Russia’s foreign policy: What does the Kremlin want?’ on 18 April

After the break-up of the Soviet Union and the relatively calm decades in East-West relations that followed, Russia has returned to the forefront with its assertive foreign policy. Dr Ria Laenen, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Leuven will give a lecture on Russia’s foreign policy on Monday 18 April, 20.00, in the Auditorium of Minderbroedersberg 4-6. Free entrance.

Speaker: Dr. Ria Laenen, Senior Research Fellow, Leuven International and European Studies Institute, KU Leuven

The examples of Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea show that the European Union is facing major challenges in its own immediate neighbourhood.

The Russian intervention in the Syrian civil war is another example of Russia’s renewed assertiveness. What drives Putin and the Kremlin to this rash foreign policy? Is it threatening to destabilise Europe once again? And is this the beginning of a new Cold War?
