Live streaming lectures via Mediasite unreliable: please use alternatives!

Unfortunately, we are currently experiencing serious problems with live streaming of lectures via Mediasite, which has led to considerable disruptions in teaching. Mediasite is a central Maastricht University service, and for that reason the problems cannot be solved at faculty level.

We therefore strongly advice colleagues not to use live streaming via Mediasite for the time being.

Alternatives to live-streaming lectures via Mediasite are:

  • Using Zoom to deliver live lectures: The Zoom session can be run from a laptop, which is connected to the larger screen (if on campus). If you cannot bring your own laptop, contact ICT FASoS to provide a laptop for your class. For very large groups, please contact ICT FASoS to set up a Zoom Webinar.
  • Pre-recording a lecture and ‘playing it live’: You can pre-record your lecture and release the recording to students just before the start of the lecture slot. Students can then watch the lecture, and later join a Q&A session via Zoom. This method also works on-campus, where the recording can be played ‘live’, followed by the Q&A session. Pre-recordings can be made from everywhere. You need a webcam and a microphone (if you use a laptop that is already provided). In case you need help with setting up a pre-recording, please email ICT-FASoS for an appointment (at least a few days before the recording).
  • Should you plan to cancel an on-campus lecture, please be so kind to inform FASoS planning ( and ICT FASoS ( in advance.

We sincerely apologise for all the inconvenience caused. Once we are certain that the central UM Mediasite live streaming functions reliably again, we will inform everyone.
