March for Science Maastricht, on 22 April

On 22 April 2017, Earth Day, thousands of people all over the world will participate in hundreds of ‘Marches for Science’ in celebration of Science. March for Science Maastricht invites everyone who feels passionate about science (e.g. researchers, students, professors, teachers, science enthusiasts, employees of research companies/hospitals, doctors/nurses, engaged citizens) to join the event at Plein 1992 in Maastricht from 12.00-14.00. Register on Facebook.

We hope that by providing a local platform it will also make it easier for families, children and (high school) students to participate and for people who might not yet care to become inspired. The March for Science Maastricht also aims to offer local institutes, companies, museums a platform to showcase their work. We feel that Maastricht, as birthplace of the modern EU, has a commitment to science and democracy and that the Maastricht EUregion, with the new Kennis-As developments and cross-border links between institutes, has a responsibility to take a strong stand in support of science.

We are proud to say that DSM is on board -they have encouraged their employees all over the world to participate in various local marches and their Director of Innovation and Science, Dr. Jens Thies, is one of the main organisers of the Maastricht March for Science. Our organising team is now reaching out to fellow Research companies, Maastricht University, Research institutes, TEDX Maastricht, Brightlands, various Brightlands inhabitants, Hogeschool Zuyd and local science-minded organisations and musea (such as Mad Science and the Continium). We have also reached out to universities in Aachen, Liege and Hasselt. We know our local international community to be passionate about science and research, and in order to make this event a success, we really would appreciate your help.

We love to invite you and your colleagues to come join us on Saturday April 22, from 12-14 hrs, at Plein 1992 in Maastricht. We encourage everyone to bring their family and friends for an inspiring walk around town. To add to the fun, everyone is invited to bring a sign, flag, T-shirt , musical instrument,or the like, expressing their passion for science. Be creative! Please note that the event is non-partisan, family friendly and positive and we ask all participants to please be respectful at all times in both communication (including signs) and behavior.

We have a Facebook event and we ask everyone to register when they plan to participate. At the moment, just over twenty people have registered. We can do better! On top of that we encourage everyone to like, heart, share, and post all that they can. The page has reached thousands of people already. We’re also on Twitter (#ScienceMarchMAAS @ScienceMarch17). In the weeks leading up to the event, we aim to regularly feature participating scientists, students and interesting local research on our social media page so let us know if you would like to showcase your institute/work.

Finally, please feel welcome to share your ideas and contacts with any of the below organizing committee. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

All the very best,

Team March for Science Maastricht

(Jens Thies, Director of Innovation and Science at DSM – Judith van Gorp, Research Scientist at DSM – Sophie Kells, Communications Officer at CES – Nathalie Ummels (06-34347277))
