She grew up in Walem, Limburg, studied in Utrecht, Maastricht and Coimbra, Portugal. Her brother is shepherd and I share my birthday with her. To top it off, Maud Oostindie, teaching assistant at FASoS, got engaged!
On a sunny day 3 weeks ago, Maud and her fiancé went for a stroll at Kasteel Schaloen. Sitting on a bench, overlooking the medieval castle, Maud pulled out a little box with a ring in it. “I had to wait a bit before I could put the ring on her finger, because Amy had to stop crying of joy first,” Maud explains laughing. The ring is a special one. Maud contacted a goldsmith in Maastricht as she wanted to use a piece of jewelry from her grandmother for the gold band. So Maud’s fiancé now wears a custom-made ring with a special history. “Amy told me she also wants to get a ring for me, so I’m looking forward to that as well, then we both have rings,” Maud explains to me.
Due to the corona crisis, the wedding will probably only take place in 2022. “We want to get married in June, but I don’t think we’ll be out of the crisis by June 2021. Also, it’s probably not enough time to plan a wedding anyway.” They did already settle on a venue though. “We probably want to get married at my parents’ place. They own a square farm, large enough to host a wedding. Not that we want to have a huge wedding, but I think it’s just a really nice idea that all your loved ones are in the same place at the same time. Usually, at for example birthday parties, a few of your friends and family members come over but others might not be able to. But now, if all goes well of course, we will all be together at once.”
Maud’s parents knew she was going to propose to Amy and Amy’s parents were pleasantly surprised to hear it when they called them after the proposal. “Amy and I are each other’s first female partners,” Maud tells me. “We have both dated men before, but felt it wasn’t right. It’s rather funny, because Amy’s brother is into men. When Amy told her mother she was into girls instead of guys, her mother exclaimed happily: ‘Oh, so I will be getting a daughter-in-law after all!’.” And now it’s official.
