NWO Call: An Integrated Approach to the Scientific Study and Conservation of Art

NWO has launched a call aiming to consolidate and develop the connections between science, conservation and art history in the form of a cohesive research programme in close cooperation with the cultural heritage field. Full proposals and seed money proposals can be submitted by interdisciplinary teams consisting of senior researchers of different research disciplines and one or more museums. The deadline is Thursday 4 June.

The research team involved in each proposal should strive for a truly interdisciplinary composition. This means that for each proposal, at least one scientist should be involved and at least one of the disciplines of conservation or art history. In addition, the relevance of the proposal for all three disciplines should be made clear.

Applicants can submit a full proposal for research plans in an advanced stage of development. However, given the experimental nature of much of the research that is done, it is also possible to submit a proposal to obtain seed money to further elaborate ideas that are as yet in a stadium that is too premature and can therefore not be submitted as full proposals.

For each full proposal, funding can be applied for maximum of two researchers, one of which must be a PhD plus either a Postdoc or another PhD, plus material costs.

For each seed money proposal, funding is worth maximum k€ 25 per proposal.

At least two of the lead partners of NICAS should be involved in every research proposal as applicants or co-applicants. This condition applies to both full proposals and seed money proposals.

In addition, museums must have an active involvement in the research, since museum collections are of central concern in the challenges posed by NICAS.
