Online Film & Talk: Stop Filming Us, on Thursday 30 April

With Stay At Home Cinema, Lumière brings the cinema experience to your home. Studium Generale is continuing the Film & Talk programme online.

Tonight, Thursday 30 April, at 19.30, we are presenting the documentary “Stop Filming Us” by Dutch filmmaker Joris Postema. SG’s Barbara Strating and Lumière’s Wouter Greven will discuss the documentary with Daisy Akoth, student at the United World College and expert on film and representation, live from Lumière.

About “Stop Filming Us”

Goma, a city in Democratic republic of the Congo, has been the stage of war, violence, Ebola disease and poverty. Or, so the media tells us. But, what are these images but stereotypes, if you frame them within the history of this part of the world, a long story of Western oppression and colonisation? How would young Congolese portray the city themselves?

The Dutch filmmaker Joris Postema portrays in his documentary Stop Filming Us journalist Ley Uwera, photographer Mugabo Baritegera and film maker Bernadette Vivuya and their struggle to portray their life and experience in Goma.
