The NWO Open Competition SSH is overhauled to give the instrument more variety in terms of grant amounts and target groups. The SSH Domain Board in consultation with the six round tables recognised not all researchers require a large grant for their research.
Three new variants are opened: XS, M and L. The XS variant will be opened before the summer. The M and an L variant will be opened every other year, starting with the M grant this autumn.
With this new set-up, the NWO Domain Board SSH wants to meet the needs of the various target groups in its research field more effectively. This change will enable the instrument to serve a broader group of researchers in different stages of their academic careers. The total budget for the Open Competition SSH will remain the same.
In the coming weeks, more information will be released about the submission requirements and the procedure. NWO is already announcing the new set-up of this instrument to give applicants the opportunity to prepare themselves. The submission requirements and the procedure for the three variants will be announced in the first week of May.

- Open for applicants who received their PhD between five to ten years ago
- Pilot consisting of four rounds; opening of calls spread over 12 months
- Available budget per round is 2 million euros
- Maximum amount per application is 50,000 euros
M
- Open for applicants who received their PhD at least ten years ago
- Opening of calls for the M variant will take place every other year, the first in the autumn of 2022
- Available budget per round is 23.5 million euros
- Maximum amount per application is 400,000 euros
L
- Open for applicants who received their PhD at least fifteen years ago
- Opening of calls for the L variant will take place every other year, the first in the autumn of 2023
- Available budget per round is 23.5 million euros
