Patrick Bijsmans in UvA debate on future of European Studies research

Patrick Bijsmans took part in a panel debate on the future of European Studies research at the University of Amsterdam on 26 November.

The debate was organised in the context of the MA course ‘Perspectives on European Integration’, led by Dr. Jamal Shahin (formerly of Maastricht University) and Dr. Claske Vos. The other panellists were Franziska Marquart (University of Amsterdam) and Piero Tortola (University of Groningen).

Questions discussed included: Why is it still important to study European integration and European governance? How can we study EU integration? What are the most recent trends that can be distinguished? Is the study of disintegration an important addition to the research field about European integration and European governance? How does the participants’ work contribute to other studies in the field and add to larger (interdisciplinary) debates? And is the study of European integration an exercise in the study of optimism?
