PhD Defence Lotte Thissen on 11 January 2018

Lotte Thissen will defend her Ph.D. dissertation “Talking In and Out of Place: Ethnographic reflections on language, place, and (un)belonging in Limburg, the Netherlands” on Thursday 11 January 2018 at 16.00. Her supervisors are Prof. dr. Leonie Cornips (UM), Prof. dr. Irene Stengs (Meertens Instituut/VU Amsterdam) and Dr. Vincent de Rooij (Uva).

To celebrate Lotte Thissen’s defence at Maastricht University, the chair Languageculture in Limburg organises a workshop on Friday 12 January from 10.00-13.00 where PhD candidates and scholars, including the renowned sociolinguists Prof. Dr. Barbara Johnstone and Dr. Pia Quist, will discuss their research in relation to the topic of Thissen’s dissertation language, place, and belonging.

Thissen’s dissertation Talking In and Out of Place addresses the question of how people, living in a constantly changing and increasingly mobile world, deal with the daily challenges of multilingualism, place-making and feelings of belonging. This book examines such challenges within the context of the city of Roermond in Limburg, a perceived peripheral province located in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. Three research cases demonstrate that peripheral areas, such as Limburg, should not be mistaken as being homogeneous areas where cultural and linguistic diversity are absent.
