The new NWO programme Industrial Doctorates aims to facilitate collaboration within a PhD research project between a knowledge institution and a private partner in every scientific area. NWO will fund four-year PhD projects to be carried out within both a university and a company. The deadline for proposals is Tuesday 16 January 2018, 14.00.
Every project must be carried by a consortium, existing of a knowledge institution (=university) plus a private partner (= commercial company). Cooperation with further organisations is allowed, but these two entities form the base of a consortium. The company must support the PhD project and the PhD candidate must work a certain time within the company. Only Dutch companies are allowed, or the Dutch brand of an international company.
The PhD candidate must be known at the moment of application. NWO differentiates between candidates who students who have recently completed or will complete their Master studies, and candidates that are currently employed by the company.
The maximum grant from NWO that can be applied for per project is 222,563 euros. This budget is primarily intended for the personnel costs (amount of 217,563 euros ) and the associated bench fee (5,000 euros): a PhD project for a period of maximum four years on the basis of a full time appointment at a knowledge institution recognised by NWO. NWO expects matching, from both the university as well as the company.
The university matching is foreseen for the indirect project costs, such as infrastructure and supervision. In the budget the university matching is expected to be of a similar amount as the NWO contribution. The company matching is foreseen for direct project costs. The size of it depends on the size of the company.
