Two public lectures on the early history of globalisation

In the framework of the Marble-project ‘On Expedition’ two outstanding scholars of other universities (Professor Nicolas Standaert, SJ of the KU Leuven and Professor Michiel van Groesen of the University of Amsterdam) have accepted to give guest lectures on specific aspects of exploratory travels during the 17th and 18th centuries, including the ‘visual culture’ of travel reports. These lectures will also be open to staff members and students of FASoS, and we would be very pleased if some of you could attend.

* On Wednesday 13 March, from 13.30-15.30, the sinologist Professor Nicolas Standaert, SJ of the KU Leuven, Belgium, will lecture on:
The Jesuits and the Cultural Contacts between China and Europe in the Seventeenth Century:
Some Methodological Issues

*And on Wednesday 10 April, from 13.30-15.30, the early-modern historian Professor Michiel van Groesen of the University of Amsterdam, will lecture on:
Images of America: A Critical Discussion of Early Modern Illustrated Travel Accounts

Both lectures will take place in the
Spiegelzaal, Grote Gracht 80-82.
