UM Debating Championship

Have you ever felt that tutorials never give you enough time to express yourself? Have people ever told you that you ought to be a barrister? Then you should consider participating in MUDCH, an annual debating tournament jointly organised by Rhetorica Debating Society and Studium Generale, in cooperation with ESA Concordantia. The event will take place at the Aula, Minderbroedersberg 4-6, on Monday 16 March, 20.00.

Held in British parliamentary style, the event allows first-time debaters to gain their first competition experience. Participation is free and a debating team consists of two people from the same faculty.

The schedule for this year:

  • 9 February-13 February: Workshops
  • 16 February-23 February: Carnival Week
  • 23 February-8 March: Practice weeks
  • 9-11 March: Trials
  • 11 March: Break announcements (final version with judges and rooms)
  • 12 March: Semi-Finals
  • 16 March: Grand Finals

The finest debaters from different faculties at Maastricht University will battle it out in two exciting semi-finals and one big finale, where we will present an award to the best debater. Judged by some of the very best debaters in the Netherlands, the winner will not only ensure the honour of her/his faculty, but also win great prizes! We can promise you an exciting evening, so come and see what university debating is all about. Don’t miss this chance to improve your debating skills!

To qualify for the big championship finale, you need to sign up for the workshop organised at your faculty by Rhetorica. In the first part of the workshop, you will be given theoretical training in the British parliamentary debating style, argumentative skills and rhetoric deliverance. In the second part, you will be trained in the practical application of the theory you have learned in two debates judged by our very own trainers and judges. The schedule for the workshops will be announced via the Studium Generale website.
