Vacancy: FASoS UCM Coordinator

Maastricht University offers a Liberal Arts programme at University College Maastricht (UCM). As an interdisciplinary faculty, FASoS provides a substantial part of the courses offered in the UCM curriculum.

In order to manage our teaching activities at UCM we are looking for a UCM coordinator as of September 2020.

UCM offers a personalised curriculum that is based on a wide variety of academic disciplines in the in the field of humanities, social sciences and the sciences. Courses offered at UCM are predominantly offered by academic staff employed at one of the six UM Faculties.

The FASoS UCM coordinator is responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Further development of UCM curriculum;
  2. Consult with FASoS colleagues about specific courses;
  3. Administration of teaching hours for FASoS colleagues at UCM.

Ad 1: The development of the UCM curriculum takes place in the UCM’s Curriculum Committee (CurrCie). This includes representatives from the faculties that provide education and staff members from UCM, the dean or a deputy. Proposals for new courses and also (major) changes to existing ones are discussed in the CurrCie. The curriculum consists of a Core part (compulsory for everyone), and additional courses in the field of humanities, social sciences and the sciences. At this moment UCM curriculum development has achieved a steady state. In addition to direct involvement in the course offer, the CurrCie also discusses UCM’s policy in general, discusses accreditation reports, and external issues that might impact UCM’s future. Finally, the FASoS UCM coordinator is also present at the annual consultation between the boards of UCM and FASoS.

Ad 2: The coordinator consults FASoS staff and Heads of Departments about individual courses, follows up decisions made in the CurrCie insofar as they relate to FASoS. In addition, the coordinator indicates and defends FASoS teaching preferences within relevant UCM decision-making bodies. This may include plans for new courses, consultation on staffing of existing courses, implementation problems, etc. Important: the coordinator is not responsible for the staffing of the FASoS courses, but the Head of Department of the course coordinator (which resembles our own FASoS policy on staffing).

Ad 3: In addition to the UCM administration and the FASoS course coordinators, the FASoS UCM coordinator is responsible for checking the teaching hours delivered by FASoS colleagues.

We are looking for an academic staff member who:

  • Is enthusiastic and has a vision about teaching and the organisation of educational and quality assurance practices;
  • Holds a PhD degree and has prior experience with teaching in this programme;
  • Holds the UTQ/BKO certificate;
  • Is an inspiring team-player;
  • Is willing to go the extra mile on the road of educational improvements;
  • Has strong social skills.

Interested candidates are encouraged to send a CV and a motivation letter (including a vision on education) by Friday 6 March to: secr.philotss@maastrichtuniversity.nl. The remuneration previewed for this position is 120 solver hours on a yearly basis.

For more information you can contact the current FASoS UCM coordinator Sjaak Koenis.
