Vacancy research interns for two Teaching & Learning research projects at FASoS

Are you a BA student who is interested in learning more about doing research? Are you maybe even considering a career in academia? Then we may have just the thing for you! We are looking for full-time research interns for two Teaching & Learning research projects at FASoS. What we offer in return are ECTS credits and a chance to participate in a research project from the start and hopefully leading all the way up to a peer-reviewed article.

You will also be offered methods training sessions, as well as sessions focused on the state of the art in the field. Both projects will commence in September 2018, though suggestions to start earlier will be considered. Both are also full-time projects that can be used for the fifth semester (i.e. 16 weeks, worth 24 ECTS).

The two projects are:

Project 1: The role of social environmental factors in first-year study success in the BA ES

In this project you will work with Patrick Bijsmans, Afke Groen and Pia Harbers to research social environmental factors that are important to the study success of first-year students. We will conduct interviews with first-year students, taking into account factors mentioned in other studies (e.g. Wilcox, Winn, & Fyvie-Gauld, 2005), but also aiming to uncover PBL specific factors. This is a project for you when you are interested in qualitative methods, interviewing skills in particular, and when you are a quick typer.

Project 2: Determinants of study success

This is a project that follows up to previous research on attendance and study success in the BA ES published by Patrick Bijsmans and Arjan Schakel (Higher Education, 2018). The follow-up project will also look at the BA AC. In addition, there is the opportunity to look at other factors that play a role in study success. This is a project for you when you are interested in quantitative methods and working with large datasets.

Interested in joining one of the project teams? Please send a motivation letter, CV and grade transcript to Patrick Bijsmans (patrick.bijsmans@maastrichtuniversity.nl) by Sunday 15 April 2018. Do not hesitate to get in touch in case of questions.
