Workshop: Implementing the EU Global Strategy, on 18 May

Maastricht University is participating in the EU-funded CIVCAP project on the EU’s civilian capabilities for conflict prevention and peacebuilding. On 18 May, the Maastricht University Brussels Campus will host a workshop in Brussels bringing together academics and policy makers to discuss how to implementing the recent EU Global Strategy with respect to civilian crisis management and the EU’s integrated approach. Registration is open to the public.

The goals of preventing the outbreak of conflict and promoting sustainable peace remain a fundamental challenge to policymakers and analysts alike. The EU and its member states require an adequate set of capabilities if they are to address this challenge in a timely and effective manner. The EU-funded research project EU-CIVCAP provides a comprehensive, comparative and multidisciplinary analysis of EU civilian capabilities for external conflict prevention and peacebuilding in order to identify ‘the best civilian means to enhance these capabilities’ and address existing shortfalls.

Hylke Dijkstra, Petar Petrov, Ewa Mahr and Sophie Vanhoonacker participate on behalf of Maastricht University in EU-CIVCAP. They lead a work-package comparing the approaches of the EU, UN and OSCE with respect to civilian capabilities. Based on their research of the last 18 months, they are hosting a workshop at the Maastricht University Brussels Campus on 18 May to discuss their findings with fellow academics and policymakers. All interested students and colleagues are very welcome to register and participate.
